Excellence in Community Policing

Policing the Communities of the Highlands and Islands

Transferees

If you’re a serving officer in Scotland, England, Wales, the British Transport Police, or the Police Service of Northern Ireland, you’re able to transfer to Northern Constabulary. You’ll have to go through the same application process as other applicants, the only differences being:

  • We’ll make contact with your Chief Constable to obtain a copy of your personal, sickness and career record, which will be inclusive of Professional Standard checks
  • You won’t have to sit the standard entrance tests

If you are an officer from the UKAEA Constabulary and Ministry of Defence Police, you won’t be eligible to transfer. Also, we are only able to accept transferees at the rank of Constable. If you have any doubts about your eligibility, contact the Police Recruitment Team on 01463 720318 for more information.

You can find out more about the conditions of service for transferees here:

Probation

Transferees are not required to undergo a probationary period. Scottish transferees will attend Police Headquarters in Inverness for a short induction course and will then go to their station. Other transferees will attend an Induction Course at Police Headquarters, followed by a 2 ½ week Conversion Course at the Scottish Police College due to the differences in law. These courses are held approximately two times per year.

Pay & Allowances

You will transfer your current rate of pay and pension with you. You will retain your Housing Allowance if you were receiving it prior to August 1994. On transfer you will receive your housing allowance if there is no police housing available.

If you choose not to relocate until after your College course, then you will not have the allowance paid until completion of this course, unless police housing was not made available (eg if you choose to stay where you are when you could be living in one of our houses, the allowance will not be paid).

Promotion

Officers who transfer and hold the relevant promotion qualifications will be eligible to apply for promotion after completion of their first Staff Appraisal ie after one year.

Removals

If you are successful in your transfer to Northern Constabulary, it will be your responsibility to arrange and pay for the removal of your furniture and personal belongings.

If you are posted to the island locations of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles and require a removal lorry, the Force will pay for the actual ferry fare of the removal lorry, as well as that of you and any family members.

The difficulties of transferring are recognised and on occasion additional expense such as overnight  accommodation and meals may be unavoidably incurred. Where such expenses are involved, transferring officers will discuss and agree with their receiving Area Commander exactly what expenses will be met and have this confirmed by way of memorandum. No other allowances may be claimed/paid.

Completion of Application Form

When you complete the Northern Constabulary Application Form, please provide us with the name and address of the Department to contact to obtain a copy of your Personal Record.
